Flight Animal: The Horse-Human Nervous System Workshop

Anxiety Is a Remarkable Tool

Learn how horses manage their inner flight animal. Horses are prey animals, extensively aware of  surroundings and constantly assessing safety. Yet they don't remain in a heightened state all the time. By observing and working with horses, we can learn about the sympathetic nervous system and how we move through it.

What to Expect

We work on the ground with horses in an enclosed pen. You will be guided through a variety of groundwork exercises as we explore how horses see their environment, respond, and move through different nervous-system states. As we watch the horses, we'll also learn to recognize these responses in ourselves and practice ways to become more centered and regulated.

There is no horseback riding during the workshop. If you would like to develop additional horsemanship or horse-training skills, private lessons can be scheduled separately. You do not need horse experience.

What to Wear & Bring

  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. Boots are best, although sturdy athletic shoes are acceptable. No sandals or open-toed shoes.

  • Wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty. We are at a barn with dirt! Activewear or workout clothing is a great choice. Dress for the temperature and bring a jacket if needed. Shorts are fine since we will be doing groundwork rather than riding.

  • Equestrian helmets are available at the barn. You are welcome to bring your own equestrian helmet. Bicycle helmets are not designed or rated for equestrian activities.

  • Gloves are optional. We have some available, or you may bring your own.

  • Bring water. Water is available at the barn, but bringing your own is recommended. Please bring plenty, particularly on warm days.

Come prepared to work with horses, get a dirty, and learn what flight animals can teach us!
