Healthy Digestion & Your Brain - Don’t Forget It!

Bowel inflammation is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor to brain pathologies, memory impairment, mood dysregulation and cognitive decline. In fact, to address these pathologies without understanding underlying gut inflammation is a mistake.

Chronic intestinal inflammation, even low grade inflammation, can increase intestinal permeability in a process we call “leaky gut syndrome.” This alteration in the tissue allows inflammatory compounds, toxins, and even microbes to enter lymphatic circulation and promote systemic inflammation. These signals can cross or disrupt the blood brain barrier, activate microglia, and drive neuroinflammation, which is strongly associated with impaired memory, slower cognition, and increased risk of neurodegenerative disease. Inflammatory signaling from the gut also contributes to a pathological process in the brain known as microglial activation. Microglia are the brain’s resident immune cells, and when overstimulated by systemic inflammatory signals, they increase oxidative stress, neuronal dysfunction, and tissue injury. This process has been implicated in Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and cognitive decline. Reviews consistently show that gut dysbiosis and intestinal inflammation are associated with increased inflammatory cytokines, impaired neuronal signaling, amyloid deposition, and reduced cognitive resilience. In addition to microglial activation is another pathological mechanism called microbiome dysbiosis. Your digestive system is home to a probiotic universe that works for you. In fact, you have just as many bacterial cells in your body as your own human cells. PMC

Increased diversity to this probiotic universe is essential. Healthy probiotics cannot grow well on inflamed tissue, so with gut inflammation comes decreased biodiversity. One main job of probiotics is to make beneficial short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), especially butyrate, a primary fuel for gut cells that helps maintain the bowel lining, reduce inflammation, and support the intestinal barrier.

Probiotics like Faecalibacterium are main butyrate producers, and in deficit is associated with gut inflammation and cognitive decline. This is a bacteria that is routinely measured on the GI Map, a probiotic assessment that I use in my practice. Faecalibacterium and others like it make SCFAs which maintain gut barrier integrity, regulate immune tolerance, and reduce neuroinflammation.

When these organisms are depleted, intestinal inflammation rises, blood brain barrier integrity worsens, and neuroinflammatory signaling increases. Studies in older adults with mild cognitive impairment show that lower SCFA-producing bacteria correlate with worsening cognition and increased hippocampal blood brain barrier permeability. (PMC)

Clinically, this helps explain why patients with chronic gut inflammation, even without digestive symptoms, may have brain fog, poor concentration, and memory changes.
